Today the Justice Department released documents showing that the Mueller investigation cost the government $16.7 million in the first 10 1/2 months. Of course, that resulted in a tweet from the president.
We would all do well to hold off on that “No Collusion” until we hear what the special counsel has actually found.
But it’s worth taking a minute to put that dollar figure in perspective.
- The Ken Starr investigation into whether or not Bill Clinton lied about having sex cost $57 million.
- The Lawrence Walsh investigation into the involvement of Reagan officials in Iran Contra cost $75 million.
- The Watergate investigation cost $26 million.
(Amounts have been adjusted for inflation)
But here’s the kicker: Trump’s golf outings have cost the government over $67 million so far. That’s four times what we’ve spent on the Mueller probe.
As I’ve said before, I don’t have a problem with presidents playing golf. But if anyone wants to complain about spending $16.7 million to find out how Russia might have conspired with the president’s campaign to influence the election, I sure as hell am going to start complaining about those golf expenditures.
